Food Buddy Bites — August 12, 2026
This week’s brief pairs consumer affordability data with an upstream supply watch, then finishes with a practical pantry meal and a historical recipe from the vault.
Food Costs Remain a Concern

A McKinsey Institute for Economic Mobility / W.K. Kellogg Foundation survey of 30,000 Americans found that 90% cited groceries and food prices as a top cost concern.
CNBC reported that the latest then-available CPI data showed food costs up 3% year over year and food-at-home prices were up about 25% over five years.
An Urban Institute analysis reported that 20% of adults used a credit card for groceries and paid less than the full balance but still made the minimum payment.
Quick Alert: Global Food Commodities Rise
The FAO food price index was 131.1 points for July 2026, up 0.6% from June and its highest reading since January 2023, with wheat up 5.8%, maize up 3.6%, vegetable oils up 2.0% and sugar up 5.6%.
The FAO index measures international commodity prices, not retail prices directly.
Pantry Bean, Rice & Veg Bowl

Three ingredients
- 1 can (15 oz) canned beans, drained and rinsed — About $0.70 per serving
- 1/2 cup uncooked rice (yields ~1 serving cooked) — About $0.15 per serving
- 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables — About $0.60 per serving
Cook rice according to package directions and divide into bowls.
Heat drained beans and frozen mixed vegetables together; season with salt, pepper and a splash of oil or soy sauce if available, then spoon over rice and serve warm.
Budget note: Values and recipe price estimates are approximate and are not local price quotes.
Why now: Pantry-first budgeting can stretch meals amid grocery-cost pressure: a large survey found 90% cited groceries and food prices as a top cost concern and CPI data showed food costs up 3% year over year.
From the Vault: Perfection Salad (adaptation)
Savory vegetables set in sweet-tart gelatin
Weird factor: 8/10 — Peculiar
Ingredients
- 2 envelopes (2 tablespoons) unflavored gelatin
- 1/2 cup sugar plus 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups boiling water plus 1 1/2 cups cold water
- 1/2 cup vinegar plus 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 2 cups finely shredded cabbage plus 1 cup chopped celery
- 1/4 cup each chopped green pepper and diced pimiento, plus 1/3 cup stuffed green-olive slices
Mix the gelatin, sugar and salt; add boiling water and stir until dissolved, then add cold water, vinegar and lemon juice and chill until partially set.
Fold in the cabbage, celery, green pepper, pimiento and olive slices, pour into a loaf pan, and chill until firm.
Unmold, slice, and serve as a cold accompaniment; mayonnaise was offered alongside in the historical version.
Historical note: Perfection Salad won third prize in a 1904 Knox Gelatine recipe contest for Mrs. John E. Cook of New Castle, Pennsylvania; this is a clearly labeled, condensed adaptation of the documented recipe. Source →
